Worlds Biggest Security Conference — Different This Year?

“In past years, I looked at the RSA security conference as a high-tech flea market staffed by the world’s best security carnival barkers. Yes, important security topics were discussed, but the real focus of the show was selling products and doing deals. This year’s event has its share of tacky presentations and booth babes, but I’m hearing a lot of chatter about a far more important topic: the state of information security and its impact on us all. Finally, the combination of unending data breaches, sophisticated malware, and the very real cybersecurity threat has everyone paying attention. There is a broad recognition that we security professionals aren’t hawking hardware or writing code, we actually have a responsibility to educate, help, and safeguard users.” — Jon Oltsik

At the opening of the RSA Conference, keynote speaker Art Coviello called on the security industry to join forces in the battle against cybercriminals. He characterized Internet fraudsters as the most organized, purposeful and effective group of security experts in the world.

Fraud threatens the very existence of the entire information eco-system” and he called on vendors to fix the “perilous” gaps dogging security implementations.” — Deborah S

Folks,
Those of us who are “security inclined” know how things are bad, but frankly, the “whitehats” are so far behind the cybercriminals, we really only have a glimpse of the ‘tip of the iceberg’.

And the “blackhats” invent new attacks everyday (it’s their full-time job!).

It is up to YOU to realize the dangers and protect your machines… and apply common sense “paranoia” while surfing the Internet.

I have provided numerous tips and advice, here, to help. Most of the sites listed on my Blogroll are there to help, too. But I’d like to also point you to a most excellent resource — an ABC’s of how to protect your machine and yourself, which is understandable (and usable) by any user skill level. Please read, and tell your friends and family about:

  1. TechPaul,

I am hoping that we are “now” in the time where the security of the internet (and our privacy)will be addressed. Educating the masses is one thing, but the internet is in a broken condition. As a community we need to quit thinking defense and go on the offense in fighting internet crime. The government, first time I can remember, is really taking a hard look at all of this. The security of our country is dependent on it. Thanks for a great read AND thanks for the “link back”…

    • Rick,
I am unsure to whom to attribute the quote, but I’ve heard it all my life and rather think it has merit — the best defense is a good offense.

It is a complex problem, as the Internet is global. Finding, prosecuting, and shutting down cybercriminals will require an International cooperation unprecedented in man’s history.
Which sounds impossible (can anyone say the League of Nations or the UN were good and productive ideas?) but (but!) so much of modern commerce depends on the Web that it just could happen.
