Meet Someone Online
I overheard a conversation between two ladies the other day. One was expressing her frustration/anger due to her discovery that her new online friend was much older and heavier than showed in his photo…
(note: I would gladly give proper attribution for this v.cool picture if I could figure out its source. It is [I believe] a spin off of the popular Demotivators posters..)
She seemed to be surprised by the discrepancy. Me? I always use a Tom Cruise picture… All joking aside: I hope this will remind you (and it might be a good idea to remind your children) that everything is not always as it appears.
And other times, they are: can you say “junk”?
Yes, nowadays we communicate, look for a date, discuss opinions or play games with people on Internet but you are right everything is not always as it appears. :)

Sandrina,
I post that picture from time to time; usually with a reference to the sex trade (“meet Fungirl22”). There is no doubt in my mind that fraudsters see the Internet as Man’s greatest invention, and they are taking full advantage of it.
While this woman was simply a “victim” of someone putting up an older, more flattering photo of themselves, criminals and creeps have been known to “pose” for much more serious (and dangerous) reasons and try to strike up “chats” with our children. It is a fact that our children are getting online at quite a young age these days, and IMHO they need to be told that the “new Friend on Facebook” may not be their friend at all.

You know, when I first heard of Viagra, I thought it was a new player Chelsea had signed… You know how crazy those foreign names are…

Adrian,
I don’t know how it is in Hong Kong, but here in the USA we could not make that mistake, as we are bombarded with television commercials (several each hour) extolling the virtues of the wonder drug of the 21st Century.

TechPaul,
That poor dude in that picture has been plastered everywhere on the internet. Have to wonder if he’s improved in appearance since the pic. Just judging by the equipment in the pic, it was taken mid to late 80’s … LOL…

Rick,
That’s my favorite part of that picture. It strikes me that he is rather proud of that setup, as well he should be – dual floppy drives (5.25″), dot matrix printer, and, and!, a color monitor!
I can’t tell from this angle, but I wouldn’t be surprised if his phone line wasn’t going into one of those amazing new “56K modem” thingies too.
