Humbling
Early this morning I drove through a fog bank that smelled like wet, burnt wood. Turns out, it wasn’t a fog bank…
At least six people were killed when a gas pipeline exploded and set off a fire that engulfed a neighborhood near San Francisco.

I salute our local firefighters.

“The blast has destroyed 53 homes and damaged 120 more, authorities said. The fire destroyed 15 acres and has been 75 percent contained.”

Sometimes.. I guess.. it takes something close to home like this to get me thinking. These people’s lives have been changed forever. I find it .. humbling.

The news is saying the 30″ pipe was +60 years old and only 3ft under the street, anyone think it was made to be in the soil and last that long? The inner structure of our country sucks, too much of it are accidents waiting to happen. What a shame this happened, glad luck was on your side.

I am afraid that your concerns about our “infrastructure” are quite .. valid.
There have been historical instances of combining the concept of “put the people back to work” programs, with “needed construction projects” (I’m thinking FDR’s electrification, levee’s, CCC and TVA).. but I’m also afraid it seems we humans tend to prefer to look to tomorrow’s quick buck than History for lessons. So… I don’t see the “decay” being “fixed” any time soon.. Just my 2¢.

& prepare to be dismayed/shocked,etc
eg.,’ the city of Philadelphia started a “brownout” policy of closing some fire companies on a rotating basis.’
WTH is going on? there’s zillions spent on invading countries in the name of democracy& zilch for the homeland that is being consumed by fire&floods.

Governments and organizations and just-plain-folks are being forced to make budget cutbacks and do “belt tightening” pretty much everywhere. I have confidence that the city of Philadelphia thought long and hard and carefully before making a reduction in emergency services..
But this is a computer and gizmo tips and advice site, so let’s drop this. The only reason I posted this article was because I had an emotional reaction for the victims, and it was a bit of a wake-up call to me.

When a community is faced with a large, and unpleasant task, I think it is time to band together, roll up your sleeves, and work as a team — as exemplified by an Amish barn raising — to get the job done.
Is there a job to done? I think so.
I hope some civil engineer(s) will chime in with some RL observations for us.
