Bathroom Humor | Happy Holiday!
I hope you all have a fun (and safe) time Trick Or Treating tonight, and your costume wins First Prize.
And please allow me to remind you not to eat too much of your loot at once, or you might feel like this guy..

* Firefox add-on allows session hijacking of popular sites
“In this digital age, we are all connected, and each of us plays an important role in securing cyberspace |
“A computer researcher has released a plug-in for the Firefox web browser that lets anyone scan open Wi-Fi networks and hijack, for example, Twitter and Facebook accounts“
(Yeah.. that’s just what we needed… Anyone else think that this “computer researcher” is an asshat?)
* Firefox zero day being exploited
“Cybercriminals are exploiting a “critical” zero-day flaw in Mozilla’s Firefox web browser to distribute malware, security firms are warning.“
* Google Street View Cars Collected E-Mail Credentials
“A blog by Alan Eustace, Google’s Senior VP, Engineering & Research admits that the payloads sniffed by the company’s Street View cars contained e-mail usernames and passwords. The statement came as part of an explanation of how the company is improving privacy controls.”
Folks, let’s not make it any easier for the Evil Doers than it it already is, see Protect your computer from cybercrime..
In other news: The good folks at TuneUp Utilities have asked me to let you know that – as of today – TU2011 is available — and they sent me an evaluation key. I installed it a few days ago.
“TuneUp Utilities is designed to keep PCs running smoothly, extend their lifecycles and provide users with a noticeable boost in speed and performance. Key features include:
- With the new TuneUp Program Deactivator, users can turn off unused programs completely to avoid the loss of PC performance. Any services, start-up entries, background processes or scheduled tasks in a program that are turned off will remain inactive until they are needed again.
- TuneUp’s Turbo Mode is 10 times more powerful than before—with a single mouse-click, users can increase PC speed by shutting down more than 70 background processes that slow down Windows 7, XP and Vista.
- The Live Optimization feature is even more focused to speed up the program that a user is working with and prevent background programs from using up too much of the PC’s resources.”
My review of TU2010 is here, and the TuneUp Utilities website is here (you can read more, and/or download a trial version…). Though I have only had it going a few days, I can say that my earlier review expresses my initial impressions here. Check it out.

Take Back Your Privacy: Opt out of 60 ad networks
“Did you know that 60 ad networks may be tracking you right now? And may be selling personally identifiable details about you? The good news: you can opt out of these networks in less than 3 minutes. Here’s how.
Forget about privacy?
Online behavior tells a great deal about us: our food likes; the car we drive; our income level; religion; gender; sexual preferences; diseases; job status; and, how many and how old our children are. Traditionally, we’ve considered much of this information to be no one’s business but our own.But thousands of companies would like to make our business their business. And with the Internet and cookie tracking, they can.”
Read the rest (including the How To steps) here. [note: I suggest you read the reader Comments (aka “Talkback”) on the article as well. (click on “View All Expanded”) ]
A Tuesday Triple Play – 3 Quick Reco’s
Today’s first quick recommendation is for those of you who use the Internet.
And since you’re seeing this, that includes you, Dear Reader. Right? Right. I have already mentioned this safer surfing tool here, but I cannot recommend it highly enough, and recent events reminded me of it, so, please take a look at Tech Paul’s Friend of the Internet Surfer Award – 2010.
Today’s second reco is for those of you who own computers.
And since you’re seeing this, that includes you, Dear Reader. Right? Right. Since you own and use a computer, you’ll want to know about (and I hope you’ll act on) this Computer Tip of the Day.
And my last quick recommendation is for those of you who enjoy good movies.
Hollywood used to know how to make good movies. They started with a good story, not a big budget for special effects. The other night, I just randomly happened to notice that a certain film was being shown. I haven’t sat and watched a movie in ages.. and, the title is on my Top 30 Movies Of All Time list, so I stayed up late and watched The African Queen.
(aka Humphrey Bogart and Katharine Hepburn)(Bogie won Best Actor for this portrayal.)
I’m too old to make a habit of staying up late, but I am glad I did it. I hope you’ll look at my Top Movies list, and I hope you’ll take a little time out of your busy, busy lives, and put your feet up and relax, and watch a decent film. (Maybe.. The African Queen, even. These actors are AFI’s #1 [male+female] after all). Life is short, they say.

Protect your computer from cybercrime..
Just follow the wizard
October is National Cybersecrity Month, and the theme is STOP. THINK. CONNECT. Protect yourself and help keep the web a safer place for everyone.
“In this digital age, we are all connected, and each of us plays an important role in securing cyberspace |
Yes folks, cybercriminals are ruining the Internet and have made it a very dangerous place to visit. But we have come to rely on it, so it is vital we take actions to secure our computers, and reduce our chances of becoming victims.
But computer security is a complex and confusing subject – and there are many choices one faces. Fortunately there’s an easy way.
Gizmo’s Security Advice Wizard asks you a series of questions, analyzes your answers, and then provides you with a customized, personal security recommendation — a complete recommendation — including download links to free solutions.
Bottom line? I have run through the Wizard several times, as various types of users, and each time the recommendations the Wizard provided was spot on with how I would answer.
I enthusiastically endorse Gizmo’s Security Advice Wizard and encourage you to go there and give it a try. Odds are good you will learn something. The folks there at Gizmo’s freeeware get a tip of my geek hat, and my thanks for going through the effort of creating this wonderful advisor “wizard”.
Because, yes folks, in today’s world you need security protections when on the Internet.
Today’s free link: Gizmo’s Security Advice Wizard
“This Wizard has been designed to help you select the best free security software for your PC based on the version of Windows that you use, your technical computer skills and your general level of security risk.“
Bonus: What do these things all have in common?
A: you got it — they are examples of cybercrime.
