Tech – for Everyone

Tech Tips and Tricks & Advice – written in plain English.

Blogging For Your Monday + Springtime

This website, this series of tech tips, which I call Tech – for Everyone, is a “blog”. The made-up, geek word “blog” (all geek speak words are made-up, btw) is short for web-log. So, technically speaking, a more accurate name for it would be Paul’s Weblog.
* Blogs (typically) provide commentary or news on a particular subject; others function as more personal online diaries.
* Having a ‘blog’ is called “blogging”; and if you do, you are a “blogger”.
* Anyone can be a blogger.

I have been a blogger for a while now – starting this daily ‘log’ (I call it a “series”) in mid-2007; and, have had some ‘success’ with it –> meaning, more people than just my mom read it. (Also, WordPress Rates Tech – for Everyone)

So it is only natural, I guess, that I am frequently asked about blogging. Do I have any pointers? Why do it? Etc..

I try to give individual, person-appropriate answers; but “generically”, I have to give these two thoughts/opinions:
* If I knew what I know now when I first started? I wouldn’t do it again.
* If you want to blog because you think you can make some money? Good luck with that. (The “good luck with that” part was said in a jaded, cynical voice.. with a dash of sarcasm, and a pinch of smirk.)

Then I refer the ask-er to this article: Five Pros and Cons of Blogging.

“Blogging has become an immensely popular activity, no doubt about that. In fact, if you’re reading this, chances are you already have a blog of your own, or at the very least, are thinking of starting one. As with all things in life, there are some pros and cons that come with the deal. Here are my top five reasons to blog… and my top five reasons not to blog..”

Related (sorta): As a tech, I am also sometimes asked about tech careers.
It is hard for me not to be quite negative in my answers.. so I will simply provide those curious with these articles:

* 10 things you gotta have to succeed in IT

“Everyone seems to agree that IT is a tough field. But what does it take to overcome the adversities and become a successful IT pro? These qualities may be the key.”

* 10 reasons for quitting IT

“There are a lot of upsides to working in IT — but depending on your situation, you might find yourself considering other career options. Jack Wallen describes a few factors that could be the last straw for some IT pros.”

* Your boss could be a sociopath. No, really.

“An author says that as many as 4% of the population are conscienceless sociopaths and many of them are managers.”

Today’s the day: Taxes
To help you meet this deadline, on the IRS website there is a page called “FreeFile”, and here you will find the “partnership links” to the free versions of 19 accepted tax prep programs — of which H&R Block’s Free File and also TurboTax are available.
To qualify, you must have an Adjusted Gross Income of $56,000 or less. So….

Is It Springtime Where You Live Yet?

To counter-balance the Monday blahs..

Quote of the day: “.. sure, he had strayed from his path. But that’s the cool thing about having a path; even when you get lost, it’s still there waiting for you to find your way back.”

Whoa. We just had an earthquake.

What the Internet is all about Department: Some *person* left this as a “comment”..

(* I really wanted to use a different word than “person”. Really.)

    • Gaia,
There are signs of Spring here, and I’m sure it will reach the Northern climes .. hopefully before too long. (I’m not a fan of Winter.)

Basically, though, I just wanted to post that photo again..
      Glad you liked it.
