Tech – for Everyone

Tech Tips and Tricks & Advice – written in plain English.

This ‘n That for Your Saturday…

Let me start today’s post by wishing you, Dear Reader, a joyous Easter weekend.

I have several, disjointed (and unrelated) things on my mind today; not one of which is a “tech tutorial”. Sorry.

1) Earlier this week, I wrote about how I get asked about blogging/being a “bogger” (see, Blogging For Your Monday + Springtime). I would like amend, and add something I did not write then: due to this online writing of mine, I have had the privilege of “meeting” some remarkable people. The purpose of, and my intent for, this website is (basically) to help out by teaching. But, thanks to these people, and the good ‘ole Law Of Unintended Consequences – turns out, I have learned a thing or two.
Or twenty.

I want to acknowledge, and thank, those of you who have participated in Tech – for Everyone, and taken the time to write in.

2) I would also like to proffer a quick reminder that SAS is offering a (limited time) 50% off lifetime licenses Easter Special. A lifetime of top drawer anti-spyware protection for $20. That gets my reco!

3) (sorta related to #1) Some of you may remember an article I wrote back in January, where I talked about a letter I received from reader who expressed disgust with CNet’s Download.com (see, I Support A Good Cause aka “An Open Letter To CNet, et al”) due to misleading “download here” advertising (links).

“Tech Paul, I am getting really sick of these download websites that try everything possible to get you to download the wrong file, usually a registry editor, but downloads.cnet.com has pushed my button for the last time…”

Today I received a note from that reader which said that they had noticed an improvement in the page’s layout design. So I took a look for myself, and had to agree.. there was a modest improvement — which causes me to say to the folks at ZDNet/CNet, “Yay! Good move, guys!
And, also, “Now admit it: there’s room for improvement. Let’s get serious and redesign.. not just ‘tweak’.”
Download.com is one of my preferred sources for safely obtaining the latest versions of freeware utilities. And I have high regard for the staff and editors there.

4) Life is not easy. Sometimes I think this fast-paced and frenetic, “modern” world we live in is not healthy (or natural) for us humans, and I get “nostalgic” for simpler, more innocent times. Even if I am looking at those times with rose-colored glasses.

Sometimes, I think we need to stop. Count to 10. And remember that each of us are fighting our own battles. And I think we need to remember to congratulate ourselves on our victories (however small).
I need to remember to do that more often… and, so, a poem:

Success

To laugh often and much;

To win the respect of intelligent people and the affection of children;

To earn the appreciation of honest critics and endure the betrayal of false friends;

To appreciate beauty, to find the best in others;

To leave the world a bit better, whether by a healthy child, a garden patch or a redeemed social condition;

To know even one life has breathed easier because you have lived.

This is to have succeeded.

Let me end today’s post by wishing you, Dear Reader, a joyous Easter weekend.
