There’s something on my mind…
The weekend is here, and I hope you, Dear Reader, will find some time to enjoy it.
Me? There’s something on my mind…which I first wrote about back in September. (See, The cigar box.)
I have been informed: a certain season starts today.
Which means it’s a good thing I finally got off my duff, screwed up my courage, and went and rang a neighbor’s doorbell, and asked the gentleman who answered if he could show me how to cast with a fly rod.
He agreed, and apparently, all my fears about the fly technique were “in my head”, and it turns out, I’m a ‘natural’. (I don’t know if that’s exactly true. But I haven’t hooked my ear yet. And it was a very nice thing for my mentor to say. Don’t you think?)
Now, I have to get off my duff, and climb into the attic, and dig out the rest of my gear.. which has been gathering dust since the last time I went fish hunting.. sometime back in the early 80’s. And guess what? Imma gonna. Today, as a matter of fact.
There’s more to life than “tech”.
Spring is here, and it’s Get-Off-The-Old-Duff getting time.
Right?
Who knew I could cast a fly?

TechPaul (or it is TroutPaul)…
Good luck with the fly fishing. We have trout around our area (stocked annually) however, actual fly fishing you do not see much of. Here it is, get in there, get as many as you can and get out : ) Fly fishing I hear is very relaxing and therapeutic.
Hey, where did you grab that trout pic… If you have the link, send it to me. I love it…

Rick,
It is my plan to “change my scene”, and I intend to change it so drastically that there will no (gasp!) Internet available.
(Though.. I don’t know how “relaxing” Internet Withdrawal” is going to be…)
I know zip, zero, nada about fly fishing.. except I have been afraid to try it, for some reason. Now I am looking forward to giving it a “spin”.
And, I got the image here: www(dot)ohiocitizen(dot)org/campaigns/dupont_c8/dupont_c8.2008.html

Good for you! It’s about time you got off your duff and did something different. And I’m not surprised that you’re a “natural”. Enjoy yourself!

Y.O.,
A pleasure to see you here again, and thank you for the warm wishes.
I did manage to do a successful attic crawl, and am happy to report my old (decades old) fishing gear is now, cleaned, lubed, sorted out, and ready to go.
(For those curious; turns out my oldest [and cheapest] rod and reel – a child’s Zebco closed reel – worked like a charm out of the gate.)

Good for you Tech Paul, I learned to cast at a young age, biggest catch was a 125lb Tarpon!

“Old Salt” Dana Berry,
I don’t really know what I was timid of about fly fishing all these years…
I guess it is kind of important the things we are lucky enough to get taught at a young age.
Which kinda makes it important to “hand down” (or.. “pass on”) what we know.
I guess.
