Tuesday – Tech Tossed Salad

Mix and match for your Tuesday. (And Software Giveaway.)

• Some time back I mentioned “virtual tours”, and how the Internet can allow us to see things and places we might not be able to get to in person.. like Rome, Italy, for instance (see, Visit The Sistine Chapel – Right Now – Free!). I came across a 360° view of the space shuttle’s cockpit, and I think it is pretty neat-o. By default, it pans around the 360, but there are ‘control buttons’ (including “zoom”). Even if you are not an “airplane nut” like me, I think you’ll find it interesting. Check it out here.
(And I notice that’s not a Macbook there…)

Old-school phishing emails make a return. I have noticed a resurgence of the old “Dearly Beloved” and “for our mutual benefit” scam email spam messages this week. Is this due to the recent stock market plunge? Are they hoping there are more desperate Americans? (You’d have to be desperate to fall for Jurassic Period [circa 1995] scams.. right?)

Though I have no evidence (that would stand up in court, say) I suspect that there are many people who make combing the online want ads for suckers their full-time job.

It is a very good (and helpful) article. I hope many will click the link and give it a read.

  2. No thought of pilot comfort in the space shuttle… and it looks like a prototype. Bizarre. Wonder how much more it would cost to put bezels on the avionics and add real seats with cushions? Ha!

    Very cool VR tour though.

    Thanks!

This 360 ‘film’ was taken in the hanger where the shuttle is undergoing decommissioning — being scrapped. There’s no way of knowing how much had been stripped out already (if anything). In zero G, I don’t know how much padding one might need.. or, if you had a space suit on.. but my understanding was, special, highly padded chairs were required to absorb the forces produced during launch (or as I call it, “blast off”), so, yeah, I noticed that too…

  3. Thanks Paul for this interesting posting. The article and vid on Charles Babbage is an interesting dimension of the “tech world…not only as we know it today” but what it was back in1847-49″.

The other tech articles are also interesting …sort of related to some of my “conflicting beefs” about the technology and the tech world we live in.

Our tech is just a collection of tools. A tool, in the right hands can be used for good. That same tool, in the wrong hands, can cause harm. (True of any tool.)
But the more I see, the more I think (about our tech), just because we can do something doesn’t mean we should.
