Good Guy Site Hacked – Business As Usual

I happened to notice an apology posted on StaySafeOnline.org which tells you all you need to know about the state of the Internet. (These are the folks whose National Cyber Security Awareness Month banner (clickable) is posted in my right-hand widget column.. the folks who brought us the catchy catch-phrase “Stop. Think. Connect.”)

A heads up and apology to our website users
On October 10th National Cyber Security Alliance discovered that staysafeonline.org had become the victim of a malicious iframe injection resulting in malicious content potentially being delivered to visitors to the website.Read more..

(That is what is called “poisoned”, in Geekspeak. Aka “staysafeonline.org was poisoned this week.”

It’s really very simple.. the hackers (folks, “hackers” is an old “media” term: today, when you see “hacker”, mentally substitute in “cybercriminal” [and/or.. “cyber mafia”].) don’t like people who try to educate you, and thus make their job harder.
Bad guys don’t like good guys, and try to put them out of business.

Get educated. Read blogs like this one, and visit StaySafeOnline.org (yes, it’s been cleaned). And talk to your kids about being aware of Internet safety.. and tell your Dear Old Sweet Aunt Martha..

Exercise paranoid common sense (Stop. Think. Connect.) when online, because you aren’t in no public library.. it’s more like a bad actor flea market, held “on the wrong side of the tracks”..

    • RJ45,
Fortunately for us all, some could debate your choice of the words “a lot”. But it does happen. (My guess would be some site gets poisoned somewhere between hourly, and daily, but I dont know that to be fact.)

I do know that there are many out there though, for whom the “game” of stealing money (online) is a full time job. (And many more for whom it’s a part-time gig.. a “sideline”.)

The “entry” comment needs to be posted on the (linked) article.

    • delenn13,
Security products are a favorite and frequent topic around here, and have been since day 1 (and I have my own lists..), though, I must confess, it has been some weeks since anyone wrote in and asked my personal reco..

      I have 3 main mantras, I guess..

      • If it connects to the Internet, it needs an AV.
      • The best AV is between the ears
      • I don’t really care which security you use, as long as you have one, and it is set to receive regular updates

Years ago, I decided that instead of another list, people would be better served by visiting a different of Gizmo’s pages – please see: A Quick & Easy Way To Choose The Best Free Security Programs

  4. Hey Paul…thanks for another informative article on Cyber Crime…twigging my brain to be more alert…leading me to this doc. I heard/taped on the subject of Cyber Crime.

Misha Glenny talked about the Cyber Crimes in depth…also on the book he has written, called Dark Market…Cyber Crime, Cops and You. Further info…

    • Gaia,
Thank you for sharing that with us.

And, you made my day, as “twigging my brain to be more alert” is what I hope to accomplish here (with my writings) as the cybercrime epidemic has been called the largest transfer of wealth by theft in man’s history.
The only defense is making Internet surfers more savvy (so, basically, we’re doomed)(but YOU don’t have to be a victim!).
