A Big Question For A Little Monday

* The more I use Windows 8 Developer’s Preview Edition (on my Desktop), the more I do not like Metro.
So much for the idea that my comfort would grow with familiarity…
But, that’s just me. Perhaps others will feel the opposite.
While this is a very early “beta” I am playing with.. I don’t see anything here that would make me want to spend to “upgrade” from Windows 7. I hope that changes as official release draws nearer.

* The subject of the Internet causing divorces has come up in conversation several times for me lately. It seems many people believe the Internet is causing more and more marriages to fail.. an epidemic, to quote a few.

I admit, smart business people, and media types,  have been quick to declare a new disease: Internet Addiction.. and yes, World of Warcraft is often cited. Some two years ago now, I wrote: Is Your (inner) Child Addicted to the Internet?, which is not only a good read, but contains a link to an assessment test you can take.

I will also admit, I have an opinion in terms of the question “is the Internet causing a higher divorce rate”, but today I will ask, not tell. What do you think?

Thanks in advance for your ‘feedback’.

* What’s new in the world of tech toys, devices, and gadgets? Well, the CES is where you go to see tomorrow’s technology.

Can’t remember if I ever mentioned it here.. not a big fan of Mondays…

Today’s quote:The saddest aspect of life right now is that science gathers knowledge faster than society gathers wisdom.” ~ Isaac Asimov

  1. Mondays is not on my Hit Parade either.

Funny you should bring up divorce and the internet. This month 13 years ago I married my husband. We both owned channels on IRC and a mutual friend introduced us in 96. We met in RL and kept visiting back and forth..just as friends. It soon developed into a relationship. We would have never met if not for the internet. We had friends do the same but some of them only met once or twice. They ended up divorcing. I think the key of our relationship was first..being friends. Neither of us were looking for anyone.

    • delenn13,
You bring up the other side of the coin: how many marriages happen because of the Internet..

.. someone is probably doing a study, but I haven’t seen it.

  2. I don’t think the internet is the cause of divorces. I think the internet is a way to make it easier to cheat. There was already “trouble in paradise”.

In a simple Google search I didn’t find too much about gaming and marriage…But most studies are now blaming social networks..Facebook , in particular.

I always wondered how these *folks* can get the funding to prove the obvious.. yet, I don’t know how many times I have seen it in my lifetime.
And then I wonder.. how come I haven’t milked that cow..?

Ha! Yes, I am okay. It just worked out that I had a few more agenda items then I had hours, and I ‘missed’ posting something for today (Tuesday). Thanks for asking!
(How’s this? I’ll try to get two items up tomorrow to compensate.)

  5. delenn13,
I am trying to experience the OS as I believe most people will (default config), and so I stick with the ‘new way’. But were this some day in the future, (Windows 8 is on all the new machines now) and I had just brought this machine home from the store, and Microsoft did not provide a “Classic” (or “Home Desktop”) (or.. Turn That Stupid Metro Thingy Off) setting.. I would do the reg hack mucho muy mas pronto

    Metro!

I can see it (liking Metro) on a phone, or small tablet. But get it off my big monitor.

      Hello

“The movies are also familiar, which makes us appreciate Vlot’s best edits—like the one that goes from Liam Neeson (as Schindler) to Elvis Presley—that much more. All in all, it’s the best video remix since “Shining.”

I think they should remix every horror/serious/drama movie trailer like this…

    • delenn13,
Of course the Developer’s Preview does not provide any guaranties what Windows 8 will look like when released to the OEM’s.. on mine, the file extensions are visible (I don’t remember changing the Folder Options.. but since that’s one of the first things I do on a machine.. maybe I did I did it out of habit?)
But so is Format as a right-click option on C:\
(IMHO, the dumbest computer thing ever).
