I have been noticing a computing trend that I have yet to see reported anywhere else in the media.

no_desk (So either it is a “just me” thing, or [once again] the media is hopelessly behind the curve.)

What I have noticed is: more people – it seems to me – are doing their computing/working standing up.

What I mean by that is, I have seen a lot more (mainly home office [aka “SOHO“]) “work areas” be counters, or other raised platforms, and there’s no chair. No more office desk and ‘executive’s chair”, is what I mean. A chairless office.
(No more Fax machines and/or 14-button phones, either.)

When I comment, these work-standing-up types are delighted to tell me how much better they like the arrangement.. and go into lengthy detail as to the advantages, over the ‘old’ chair-sitting-behind-desk way.
The most common refrain is “I think better on my feet”.

They tell me it’s healthier, and they feel they are more productive. (And with a “hands free” headset.. they don’t get tangled in the cords..) Me? I’m a sitter. I purchased a deluxe, ultra-perfect “captain’s chair” for my office and I intend to get my money’s worth out of it.
But I can sure see the advantages these stand up arrangements are enjoying.. I have to confess.

How ’bout it? Have any of you out there “gone chairless”?

  1. I don’t think I could do a stand-up workstation. I can barely sit at a desk for long, although I don’t have a good desk chair in the slightest. I usually end up working on blogs/my resume/etc. sitting sideways on my couch or in my bed. My future office must have a couch or I will never get work done, apparently.

    Yay for 100% awareness!

    • Samantha,
      Um…
      Er…
I think (but could be wrong) that a couch is sorta, well, uh, the opposite of what we’re talking about here…
      Ha!

      I say, whatever works.
But I also have to confess these people (I have seen/talked to) are very successful/productive people… (we used to call them “Type A”) Maybe there’s something to this.

      • Well of course a couch is the exact opposite. This is why I think standing up would not work…but perhaps I’ll try it sometime. It can’t be any worse than my terrible desk chair. :)

        • Samantha,
          All light-hearted kidding aside, now.
I found my ultra-deluxe, faux leather, fits-me-like-a-glove, has-cool-levers-and-knobs (and wheels, but no motor), commander of the universe “captains chair” at a store of the type I call a “second hand store” (others call ’em “thrift shops”, and yet others “Salvation Army”) and paid $10 for it.

I have to say it was probably the best $10 I ever spent in all my decades, and so I humbly suggest you “keep your eye out” for a similar bargain.. if you spend any time at all at your desk.. I mean.

  2. I also have a super deluxe top-o’-the-line captains chair for sitting at the computer. And I’m a Type A. But, I do have an unusual situation… my bad back won’t allow standing in place for more than a few minutes. However, when my back was in good shape I still never stood at a workstation unless it was for a short test run. Small periods of work.

Now if I were in an environment where I had to move around a lot, yeah, standing makes sense. Otherwise I keep a good posture in a sitting position and work my fingers to the bone!

      As I said, I’m a sitter.
In fact, I have been accused of holding the world’s record.. (I’m rather ‘Type B’).
