Happy St. Patrick’s Day

What is St. Patrick’s Day all about?

“Saint Patrick’s Day (Irish: Lá Fhéile Pádraig (The Festival of Patrick Day)) is a cultural and religious holiday celebrated on 17 March. It commemorates Saint Patrick (c. AD 387–461), the most commonly recognized of the patron saints of Ireland, and the arrival of Christianity in Ireland. It is observed by the Catholic Church, the Anglican Communion (especially the Church of Ireland), the Eastern Orthodox Church and Lutheran Church. Saint Patrick’s Day was made an official feast day in the early seventeenth century, and has gradually become a celebration of Irish culture in general.”

A Little Tech (to keep me honest):

* Copy Cassette Tapes and Vinyl LPs (Records) To CD With Audacity

I don’t know how many times over the years I have been approached and asked if I knew of a low cost software solution to copy (or convert) cassette tapes and Vinyl LP’s (records) to CD (or the computer). To be honest, and being as software savvy as I think I am, I often was not able to provide a good solution and left scratching my head.” Read more…

  1. Yes… A Real Shamrock…beautiful photo! I guess I could say that I celebrate St. Pat’s Day every day… enjoying my Gigantic Shamrock. It’s so beautiful, with it’s vivid green leaves, adorned with it’s constant white blossoms…one of my favorite plants for certain. Thanks Paul.

I think the letter promises to insure the delivery of some (tasty-large) sum they ‘intercepted’. I merely have to give them a few personal details, and prove I am who I am.
So they can release the funds.

Hard for me to imagine someone falling for this in 2012…
      Wait.
For a moment I forgot about Barnum’s Law.

  3. Another {good] TR man !!–I should’ve known!!

Just on that, Have you read:
    http://www.zdnet.com/blog/diy-it/16-reasons-not-to-buy-a-new-ipad-including-7-that-havent-changed-from-earlier-ipads/462?tag=nl.e539

I have seen a lot [but not ALL], of people using mobile/smart devices, but I have yet to see one being used in an “indispensable” manner. I am beginning to believe it is all [mostly], “hype”.
Akin to the “Detroit Mentality” created by the automotive manufacturers…Say you are a stockbroker, and I call you to my house to advise me on investing. When I answer the door, the first thing I do, is to look over your shoulder, to see what type/year of car you are driving, like that is a measurement of your success/expertise….

    The marketing/sales shakers/movers have created another paper-clip…

I think [ultimately], the number of computers [or cell phones], thrown away annually may only be exceeded by the number of smart/mobile devices. Read:

    And:
    http://computer.howstuffworks.com/discarded-old-computer1.htm

    One company—11,000 PC’s, in three years—that is 3,000+ per year !!!
….And WE have a problem with enough PC’s for children/students/etc, [we won’t even talk about other/3rd world countries]…..

I read an article a while back about a guy [Minnesota/Wisconsin/somewhere Midwest], who owns a “full service” computer store. As a side-line, he rebuilds old PC’s people give him [for various reasons], and gives them to kids who can’t afford one. His total for the previous year was 167 [if I remember right–and I have a memory like a steel trap]…I know I was impressed, but you do the math….

‘Nuff said !!!… [ I will now “politely dismount” ].. sorry about that !!!

    • Sam,
Yes I did read and enjoy that article (and posted it as a reading reco on Thursday).

And I try to ‘rebuild’ and donate machines here at Aplus as well, but recently that has been more difficult as – thanks to the cybercriminals – I will not put 32-bit XP out there on the ‘net unless it’s virtual/sandboxed (which most people don’t know how to use), and so the recipients need to know, or be willing to learn Linux.
So the old boxes more often than not get “green” recycled.

      Hype…
      Don’t get me started!

      Thanks for this thoughtful comment.
