Tech – for Everyone

Tech Tips and Tricks & Advice – written in plain English.

Maybe You’ll Find These Helpful..

Sometimes, I find it very difficult to bite my tongue.. But I’ll be nice. Today I have some good info to share with you. Read on.

Apple (Mac) owners: Apple releases Flashback removal tool, infections drop to 270,000

Apple today released an update to its Java component that removes known versions of the Flashback malware. In a separate study, Symantec reported that it counted only 270,000 infected Macs, down…Read more..

Yes, folks.

The days of “Apples do not get viruses” are O – V – E – R. (Been true for a while now..) Fortunately, there’s an AV for Macs that’s not only good, but free: Sophos Anti-Virus for Mac Home Edition
“Free antivirus that works simply and beautifully.”

Reminder: The deadline for filing with the I.R.S. is mere hours away. To help you meet this deadline, on the IRS website there is a page called “FreeFile”, and here you will find the “partnership links” to the free versions of 19 accepted tax prep programs — of which H&R Block’s Free File and also TurboTax are available.
To qualify, you must have an Adjusted Gross Income of $56,000 or less.

Today’s (2nd) free link: FreeFile at the IRS
(Note: there’s two buttons on the page; “I will choose” and “help me choose”. Though all of the programs there are accepted by the IRS, I would recommend clicking the “I will choose”, and then selecting either H&R Block or TurboTax.)

Best for last department: I met a guy. Think you may want to be aware of him. More precisely, be aware of what he does.

What he does – with his Free Data Recovery site – is help people rescue data from hard drives that have decided to go severely wonky, and/or push up daisies. Die. Go kaput.

A Revolutionary Approach
Welcome, my name is Stephen and I’ve put up this site to begin the roll out of a truly unique remote data recovery service that I think has the potential to revolutionize the field of hard drive data recovery.

Q: Who might benefit from knowing about Steven and his new FDR?
A: Anyone who does not have a proper backup strategy in place (aka “everyone”).

Q: And why is this “revolutionary”?
A: Well, click the link (above) and he’ll tell you. What I’ll tell you is that data recovery is an expensive endeavor (often involving “clean rooms”) and those of you with business critical data (aka “corporate”) should use that kind of (expensive) service — but for us average folk, trying to recover a few photos, say, well Steve is the guy to call.
Seriously.
Click the link, or the image, and find out why. (And when you talk to him, tell him I sent you.) Read more..

Your “Friday Fun”: Today’s funny video is a bit adult (language) and so I am just going to provide the link, and leave it up to you. But it is a classic Chris Rock sketch. http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=-880897175401400927

Got this in my email yesterday..Get a $50 game bundle for $4, help feed the hungry | The Cheapskate – CNET News I already knew about it but been busy.

The primary bundle consists of five games, all of them compatible with Windows, three also available for Mac. They’re listed below with links to their Steam product pages, as that’s where you’ll end up accessing them:

    1. Beat Hazard (PC/Mac), a unique arcade shooter that integrates your own music library into the gameplay.

Between Beat Hazard, The Baconing(LOL) and Killing Floor you can’t go wrong.

Killing Floor (2009 video game) – Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

“Killing Floor was originally a total conversion mod for the game Unreal Tournament 2004, first released in 2005. The lead developer Alex Quick was first approached by Tripwire Interactive about porting Killing Floor to their game Red Orchestra: Ostfront 41-45, but Quick did not follow through. A few years later, when their user base started to dwindle, Quick contacted Tripwire again to negotiate the port to Red Orchestra, and its distribution via Steam—similar to what Tripwire had already done with another Red Orchestra mod Mare Nostrum—and then later, the retail game. The mod version had its fifth and final official update in July 2008.

The full retail version was announced in March 2009. With the assistance of the original mod team, Tripwire would be the new developer.

Killing Floor was released on 14 May 2009 after about three months of work by a crew of around ten developers

Killing Floor was the top-selling game on Steam shortly after it was released (as of May 19, 2009). On February 14, 2012, Tripwire Interactive announced that Killing Floor had sold over 1,000,000 copies on PC.[15]

Killing Floor has won a number of awards including Overall Best PC Game of 2009 in Voodoo Extreme’s Reader Choice Awards. It also won 2 other categories in Voodoo Extreme’s Reader’s Choice Awards: Best PC Shooter of 2009 and Best PC Game Expansion or DLC of 2009.

EuroGamer commented that “though not perfect”, it was “clever and relatively cheap”. GameSpot commented that the game graphics compared poorly with contemporary shooters, and that the voice acting was bad, but considered that the sound effects were very good, and that despite its flaws, “you can’t help but enjoy it.” Some reviewers also considered that the lack of any real plot or aim for the players other than killing specimens, the small number of existing maps, and the repetitiveness of the gameplay reduced its replay value. Killing Floor has a Metacritic score of 72/100 from critics and 8.8/10 from users.”

Some games are on sale(including all the Flatout games)..on both these sites..
