You Plug In A Storage Device, And Nothing Happens

A reader e-mailed me a question I believe will be of interest to other readers of this series. He wants to use a thumb drive to transfer files between his computer at his work and his home computer, but the work computer will not “recognize” (aka “see”) the thumb drive when he plugs it in. He wanted advice on how to fix this.

Q: My thumb drive works great at home, but when I took it into work to try and copy some files so I could work at home, I plug it in and the little window never opens so I cannot use it. What am I doing wrong?
A: There are several possible reasons for this, and here’s a few things to try: Read more..

  1. This is weird. The MIL called tonight and all her flash drives, SD cards..aren’t showing on the PC.

So..if we can’t figure it out..I am just gonna tell her..”If these steps fail to allow Windows to see the USB thumb drive, submit a trouble ticket to your company’s IT department.” Think it will work???

Well… if the problem computer is a company (aka “at the office”/corporate) machine, then, yes. Might work.

But if you are her “IT Department”, you might want to think of something else to tell her.

      • What? No helpful hints?? :)

The problem with being her “IT person” is..the crowd of people(kids and grandkids) who use her laptop and just decide to remove/disable whatever from her PC. She calls and we go over and her virus, anti malware etc had been disabled or removed. Her wifi has even been wide open and we know we locked it down. About every 3 months or more we get this call….”My computer is running slow” or…”this won’t work..etc”, Gee I wonder why..

Why aren’t the guest users (especially kids) using the Guest account?

          Okay, two helpful hints:
          1) Wondershare TimeFreeze (or Comodo Time Machine)
          2) Universal Serial Bus Host Controller
