Changes Coming To SkyDrive – Act Now.

Those of you who are using the Microsoft “Live” online file storage service (called “SkyDrive”) should be aware that important changes are being made due to general service improvements — changes that will effect you, unless you act soon.

Up to now, SkyDrive gave you 25 Gigabytes of free storage — but that is being cut down to 7 GB’s, unless you “claim” more. You can keep getting 25 GB’s for free, or purchase even more space. Here’s what you need to do:

First, sign into your “Live” account (such as, Hotmail), and go to your SkyDrive (or, click here and sign in).

Click on the blue “claim your free 25GB”..

And click one of the “upgrade” option buttons. The top button “upgrades” you back to the free 25GB level.

(I believe you want to click these things soon.. like, now. Particularly if you are going to be “sharing” movies and/or music files.)

I like SkyDrive, and the recent improvements, and coming improvements, make this a hard service to beat for easy file sharing, syncing, and online access across devices.

“Think about all of the different devices you use every day. Wouldn’t it be nice if your files came with you, whether you’re on your phone, Mac, or PC?

When you use SkyDrive, you’ll never be without the documents, notes, photos, and videos that matter to you. Store anything on your SkyDrive and it’s automatically available from your trusted devices—no syncing or cables needed.” Read more..

    • g,
Good to see you here again.

SkyDrive (and the coming Windows 8) are showing significant changes that indicate that Microsoft is not unaware of this whole “cloud computing” thing.. and that they want to be a significant player.
      (Worth keeping an eye on.)

        • g,
I only had time to quickly pull this from MS..

“Windows XP is currently not supported at this time.  The official system requirements for SkyDrive is listed here:

          http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows-live/windows-live-2011-system-requirements

          Thanks for using SkyDrive!”

I understand that for many, XP is what they have, and what they’ll stay with, but Microsoft is ending support. Many of their newer programs and application simply will not run on XP.

          • thanks. I didn’t catch that. My laptop is going on 4 years old now so I’ll probably be getting a new one in a year or so.

            • g,
4 years is smack-dab in the center of the “average lifecycle” of a digital device – 3 years (or so) for those Techie types who crave the latest doodads, and 5 years for higher end devices, and “normal people”.

If the specs on the unit are good enough (say, dual core and 4 GB’s of RAM), I might consider putting Windows 7 on it.
(Unless I was looking for an excuse to get an Ultrabook-type unit, with an “i” series quad-core and solid-state hard drive.. )

But, yeah, XP is 11 years old now (77 in human years) and past ready to be retired.

  3. Microsoft is still innovative and aware of the cloud, but usability is just not there with Skydrive. Got the free 25Gb but no file name searching is available unless it is an Office file. That’s right, use up those 25Gb with anything but Office files and you can’t search them eg PDF, JPEG, RTF, TXT. Surely Bing just needs a minor tweak to accommodate this?

I suspect that issues such as this will be resolved as these things evolve and mature.
