The Borg Are (Indeed) Coming

A quick reading reco (and I very much encourage reading the comments this one has garnered. All 7 pages of them!) [update: now it’s 13 15 pages of comments.. quite a reaction!]

* Cloud haters: You too will be assimilated

You despise the idea of losing your individual computing power. You hate subscriber services. You don’t trust our security model or feel we are reliable enough. You don’t believe your connectivity will ever be good enough. It doesn’t matter: Your distinctiveness will be added to our own. We are the cloud. Do not resist us.Read more..

I guess I qualify as a “cloud hater”.. as yes, you will have to pry my powerful Desktops and software licenses out of my cold, dead fingers… The Privacy and Security issues are cause enough to run far, far, away from cloud computing.

IMHO.

  1. I could not agree more with you Paul. That article definitely got under my skin. The phrase “it sucks to be you” was aimed right at me. And If they do indeed completely stop manufacturing PC’s, I WILL continue to build mine from scratch!!!

    • KsTinMan,
For those of us who could build their own PC, that idea does indeed take some of the concern out of the “big picture” (assuming parts remain available).
(And since I am quite a bit older/more mature than 19, the Internet itself interests me less and less every day, so “going off the grid” has certain “big picture” appeal as well.)

But I truly think all those who declare the PC “dead” are.. um, er, let me phrase it “off base”.

  2. Hi Paul,

It’s up to 16 now. And the way the conversation is going, it does NOT suck to be me. So there..Cupcake. :) Of course, there are those that would not mind being assimilated… if Seven of Nine was doing the assimilating. (Maybe a bit NSFW)

My PC’s have always been built from scratch. And “The Cloud” is an option..not a requirement. And even though no one cares, I prefer “Indie Games.”

    • delenn13,
If Perlow wrote that as a bait piece, he sure did a fine job. But, sadly (I think) he’s largely right (as non-techies make the budgets, and the Industry focuses all on the lowest common denominator, and bends to “consumerization”).
