A moment for remembrance

Memorial Day is a United States federal holiday observed on the last Monday of May. Formerly known as Decoration Day, it commemorates U.S. men and women who died while in the military service. First enacted to honor Union soldiers of the American Civil War, it was expanded after World War I to include American casualties of any war or military action.

Many people observe this holiday by visiting cemeteries and memorials. A national moment of remembrance takes place at 3 p.m. Eastern Time. Another tradition is to fly the flag of the United States at half-staff from dawn until noon local time.

Some Americans view Memorial Day as the unofficial beginning of Summer, and the holiday is also used as a time for picnics, barbecues, family gatherings, and sporting events. One of the longest-standing traditions is the running of the Indianapolis 500.

Today

Folks, for many of us it is the start of a long holiday weekend. And to those who are starting early, I say I’m jealous, and let’s be safe out there.

Though Memorial Day (for some of us, anyway) calls for somber and serious reflection, it also kicks off my favorite season – Summer! So to help get the party started.. you might want to take a look at something a fellow tech blogger posted (quite out of character, I might add): Revisit Van Halen’s Eruption With This Young Girl’s YouTube Video

Today’s topic is off topic; but, is a sensational off topic. If you grew up in my generation of the 1970’s, then you are familiar with Van Halen. If you are familiar with Van Halen, then surely you are familiar with his solo guitar performance of Eruption, which is second on the Guitar World’s list […] Read more..

(Van Halen was my band, and I went to more of their shows than any other group’s. This video was a kick!)
