I am a Retired computer & network technician. I used to think the machines were pretty cool. Now I don’t.
They’re anything but.
I regularly posted how-to’s and tricks & tips and general computing advice here starting in 2007. (Use the Search tool to find answers. But be aware, many are rather dated.) Sometimes I answered (your) specific questions in an article if I believed the answer was generally helpful to “everyone”. All the writing you see was my own, typos and all. There always is/was an implied “IMHO” in what you see here.

Tech - for Everyone 
Been a bit busy lately. Binging on Netflix watching OitNB with Kate Mulgrew and getting ready to start watching House of Cards and maybe this Derek everyone is talking about. Plus I am cursing and fighing with Google+ and YouTube for wanting to combine my profiles. This is BS. I don’t want Google announcing to the world/family/friends what “Hot” videos I am watching late at night. I have “Circles” in Google+ for a reason….and I thought Google understood; that is why they supplied them. If they are gonna combine my profiles and push what I am doing to my circles..what is the point of the damn circles? If I want them to know, I will tell them.
Anyways, Nothing new. No decent free games or software. Sorry A friend of mine made some cool Mashup videos of OitNB. If you aren’t watching, I bet your girlfriend/wife is. So here is a gift…You can make points with the girlfriend..etc. Some of the language is NSFW but there is NONE of the lesbian sex scenes from the show in these videos.

Good to see this here.. and – though you stimulated thought – I have just two things to say:
1) Google is evil.
2) At sometime or ‘nother, you have probably heard the “philosophical” question – Does art imitate life, or does life imitate art?” I wonder what the long-term, unintended consequences of such “gritty” shows as Breaking Bad, OITNB, etc., will be on our culture.
Frankly, I’m not optimistic.
(I kinda enjoyed House of Cards [I like Kevin Spacey], but haven’t seen Derek.)

I am believing that more and more every day. I dropped my hotmail account because MS bought it. Then I was having a fight with my ISP(and they ALL do it here) because they were censoring my email so I switched to the beta Gmail when it first began. I probably have over 3,000 emails archived in Gmail. So now I don’t know what to do. You just can’t win. I am using WinMail on Win7 because I forced it to work. I could even if I wanted to make the calendar work but I have a one already(Not in Gmail). But to change ALL my emails/newsletters/passwords/websites etc back to my Reg mail would be a really intense project.
I really don’t watch a lot of TV. I had rather watch it on my PC and be busy doing other stuff too. Hmmm..the gritty stuff. It’s like watching a movie. So are you saying if we watch this stuff, our reality will change? Is that like blaming gaming for the violence? I watched “Tom and Jerry” and Roadrunner and I knew in real life if a person was hit by an anvil from a cliff..it would not flatten them and then they would bounce back. I knew it was a cartoon. I play games and I love scifi. But then I don’t think kids,today, know the difference… So maybe it will be like you said later on…..
The networks and cable companies, as far as Netflix is concerned, better wake up. I am enjoying watching TV WHEN I want. I do have to watch my bandwidth..Netflix exec: Canada’s broadband caps “almost a human rights violation” — Tech News and Analysis They charge an arm and a leg. I am paying around 60.00 a month for 90G. My entire cable bill is 190.00. I have “Ma Bell” out of life. So my cable bill is internet, phone and cable and i have the basic cable…No pay channels. We did invest in a Roku box and have been checking it out…In the next few months we may be saying bye bye Cable TV and just raising our cap.

To answer your specific questions (posed in para#2), I feel compelled to say that I am not a sociologist, and I have no direct stats to cite inre: media/propaganda (ala Joseph Goebels), but my personal belief is that answer 1 is “yes”, and 2 is “no” (violence existed prior to violent video games) however, I would posit that the violence seen in our culture/media – such as is portrayed in video games and movies and lyrics – will/does have an effect. (Perhaps very, very subtle, and perhaps immediate and blatant.)
.. for example, if everywhere you turn on TV (and whatever movie you watch) people are using the foulest, basest, language (to portray gritty realism) the message is being sent that such foul-mouths are perfectly acceptable. (The apologists say that the “art” is just imitating real life.. that [some] people do in fact cuss every other word..) To me, and many I know, such language is not only not acceptable, it’s offensive. But… we do live in the era of Target The Lowest Common Denominator.
See.. I believe that Goebels (and his ilk) proved that the media can control (um.. “heavily influence”) people’s beliefs, attitudes, and behaviors (in his day: print, radio and film+censorship). I further believe that TV is an excellent propaganda tool, and that it is being used as such.. only we call it “advertising” and “politics” (and mine only comes on for football).
I freely admit my thinking is not mainstream, and I don’t want/mean to invite debate.. it is just what I currently believe (after decades of observation), and — you asked.
* My latest project has been to set up my own mail server. None of the currently available (public) services, I am aware of, are trustworthy (and subject to “outages”). (And, I need a use for my iMac.)

I can agree to that. (But I am thinkin’ the “tech guy” watches a lot of TV/movies and listens to Hip Hop.. ;-) )
It was finally my turn to get one of those calls, about two weeks ago. The “tech guy” was a woman.

My Overview Of Comments On This Posting
Yup, I’ve had some of those calls from those Con Artists, so has my friends from all over Canada. The “up side” is: we did NOT get conned by those mongrels … ending up with just another rant!
Re: Paul’s Quote: “I Agree to strongly Agree…” “to portray gritty realism, the fowl mouths/actions are perfectly acceptable”… I agree to the end of his quote and then some!
Further… Google being Evil: Yes, we know that Google and “others” like Face Book has made their careers on “our interactions” on the web.
In order to survive we have to Think Critically, be Aware and take our stuff as far as we are comfortable with.
Our lives on line is “Interwoven in ways we are not aware of or even understand.” It’s no longer enough to be skilled at thinking about our “own vested interests.”

Paul, Thanks for this Stop,Think, Connect web site. I listened and read it …even though it is kind of long and dry. Hopefully people will be interested enough… will take the time to pay attention to it. I have a long list of people to send the info.out to, including a lot of busy people, who mainly text…but who knows??? it’s worth a try!
