Just Because We Can Do Something, Doesn’t Mean We Should

Here’s yet another creepy, extremely bad idea.

Meet Pepper, the ‘love-powered’ humanoid robot that knows how you’re feeling

If the thought of a humanoid robot in your home makes your skin crawl, meet the friendly Pepper.

Pepper is a cute, wisecracking personal robot designed to bring joy to everyone, and Japanese mobile carrier SoftBank wants people to start buying it next year for the price of a high-end PC.Read more..

Doesn’t anyone read sci-fi? Or go to movies? I mean, cheese, I thought every single human on planet earth saw at least one of the Terminator movies..

Do you really want something in your home constantly watching your facial expressions, listening to your words, and reporting it all back to the mother ship, via the *totally secure* Internet??? (XBox One owners don’t need to answer that, you already have such a device.) And that mother ship probably resides in China? Even better!

Almost forgot: Happy Anniversary to Me.
WordPress reminded me that it was precisely 7 years ago yesterday that I started my public writing here.

Time has a funny way of disappearing on me when I’m not looking.

‘Reset the Net’ Initiative, 6-6-44, and Friday Fun too

I think all web surfer’s could benefit from reading this article. (And it includes a free “privacy pack”.)

‘Reset the Net’ promotes security at enterprise and individual levels

Heavyweight tech companies, like Google, Mozilla and Reddit, and privacy advocates have kicked off a campaign to help make users’ online communications and data “NSA-resistant.”” Read more..

Why do we need to be thinking/doing such things? Because the Internet is fundamentally flawed – it was never designed/intended to be used as we now use it.  Yet we blindly go on, business as usual, because 1) it’s all we have, 2) we’re now addicted to it, and 3) it’s making a few (think “handful’) people big money.

Today’s Friday Fun Video

70th Anniversary:

Shortly after midnight the assault opened with the landing of more than 13,000 American, British and Canadian airborne troops …

.. followed by an amphibious landing of Allied infantry commencing at 6:30 AM…

landing-in-france

.. wading ashore on five beaches, codenamed “Utah”, “Omaha” (American), “Gold” (British), “Juno” (Canadian), and “Sword” (British). Free French, Polish, and Commonwealth troops also landed. The place was Normandy, France.

The operation was the largest amphibious invasion in history, with over 160,000 troops landing on 6 June, 1944. Over 5,000 ships were involved.

It is my humble opinion that the best book to read if you want to learn about D-Day, and the liberation of France from Nazi occupation, is The Longest Day by Cornelius Ryan. (The movie isn’t bad either.. after all, John Wayne’s in it..)
