You can’t save every puppy in the pound

I hadn’t heard that adage in, oh, I’ll guess, probably 25 years.

And then, I heard it twice in two days, starting yesterday.

Now.. I’m the kinda guy who takes notice of.. um, ‘coincidences’ like that. Though I’ll confess, I rarely, if ever, can decipher their.. uh, um.. ‘meaning’.

I heard it yesterday while talking with a faithful client, who seemed a much happier person than I’d ever seen her before. I mean.. radiant. I asked her what had changed, and she told me how she had recently ‘rescued’ (aka ‘adopted’) a dog from the pound; and she told me about the dog’s frustratingly finicky eating habits (it apparently eats anything), and it’s behavior problems (it’s constantly trying to lick her face), and how it never – ever – leaves her side, and gets underfoot. (aka she follows her into the bathroom.)

She told me that selecting Daisy was easy, but she regretted not being able to adopt all the animals she saw in the waiting-for-adoption cages at the shelter.
I have experienced that emotion myself.
But you can’t save em all.

Then today, I heard the term used as a cop-out. An excuse for accepting the status quo. Why try? What good will sacrificing for one do, when there’ll still be millions of others. (Why be the one guy who drives an electric car, when there’s still billions of trucks, trains, buses, cars, etc. burning fossil fuel — for example.)

Thinking on these two ‘events’ hurts my tiny little pea brain, so I’ll just focus on the change for the better I saw in my client. And I’ll take comfort in knowing that Daisy eluded a sad ending, and now has a joyful and loving home. (From what I saw of her IQ, about 2 hours of training is all Daisy’ll need.)

And I’ll conclude by asking anyone who has read this far to help their local shelter, or the SPCA, any way they can; and to be responsible pet owners and have their pets spayed/neutered.
And if you have been consistently less-than-radiant lately, maybe consider rescuing a Daisy of your own? IMHO, it’s worth it.
