How To Protect Your Wi-Fi (and other items)

Folks, there’s no good (tech) news, but (as usual) plenty of scary headlines. So I urge you to get proactive and harden your wireless router (as per the article below).

Bad News Sampler Platter: (Just today’s)

* Malicious Minecraft apps affect 600,000 Android Users

“So you love Minecraft? You might want to be very careful before downloading the cheats for the popular Minecraft game from Google Play Store. Nearly 3 Million users have downloaded malicious Minecraft Android applications for their smartphone and tablets from the Google Play store, security researchers warned.Read more..

* Android ransomware distributed to English speakers in spam campaign

* Report: IRS breach impacts more than 100,000 taxpayers

Okay. So here’s today’s main article: How to stop Wi-Fi hackers cold

When someone hacked a neighbor’s Wi-Fi router to engage in nefarious activities, the only effective defense was to plug a widespread WPS vulnerability.” Read more..

Please note that while the technique advised in the article will not make you bulletproof; but it will “harden” your gear to where you will no longer be quite the ‘low hanging fruit’. If you do not know how to access your router/WAP’s Control Panel, look at (and note) the unit’s Make/Model and do a search for “Make/Model+update firmware”. Go to the search result that contains the manufacturer’s URL (i.e., netgear.com if yours is a Netgear). (You DO look at URL’s before you click.. Right?)

TGIF + Memorial Day Weekend 2015

Memorial Day is a United States federal holiday observed on the last Monday of May. Formerly known as Decoration Day, it commemorates U.S. men and women who died while in the military service. First enacted to honor Union soldiers of the American Civil War, it was expanded after World War I to include American casualties of any war or military action.

Many people observe this holiday by visiting cemeteries and memorials. A national moment of remembrance takes place at 3 p.m. Eastern Time. Another tradition is to fly the flag of the United States at half-staff from dawn until noon local time.

Some Americans view Memorial Day as the unofficial beginning of Summer, and the holiday is also used as a time for picnics, barbecues, family gatherings, and sporting events. One of the longest-standing traditions is the running of the Indianapolis 500.

And ya’ know.. I need a dose of Pearl Jam.

Here’s a thot: I used to read three newspapers a day, and instead of music I listened to ‘talk radio’ (In a past life, I was a Journalism Major). One of the best decisions I ever made for my ‘mental health’ was to ignore the Infotainment (aka “news”) and fearmongering/propaganda, cancel my subscriptions, and turn off the TV. I highly recommend it to all my friends. (And you’ll save over a thousand a year, too..)

This guy explains the arguement fairly well (IMHO): How To Stop Watching TV – Why You Must Eliminate TV Right Now!

Yup. That’s right. With the exception of last year’s Super Bowl, I haven’t turned on my TV in almost three years. (If I do watch something, I do so on Netflix. (No ads).)
