Tech – for Everyone

Tech Tips and Tricks & Advice – written in plain English.

Just now, Hotmail (oops, I mean Outlook) changed!!

Microsoft just now did one of those things I just simple H-A-T-E! They “modernized” the user interface (no doubt to make it more compatible with ‘mobile devices’) and changed the look of my Inbox.

Thanks a lot Microsoft! Don’t you know we users detest this crap?

Didn’t you learn from the kickback you received from Office’s “Ribbon”? Or Windows 8?

Crap man. At least offer a setting that says, “No thanks. Leave my Inbox the *&^% alone.”

And now to send an email, I have to learn where you moved the buttons and thingies.. Just how I wanted to spend my time! (Not good to change the “insert inline image” to a seperate command button..)

NO. I am not going to start using One Drive just because you always default point to it. Or put shortcuts – for me – to it.

Our mutual friend

I haven’t posted a snapshot from my Inbox in a while… But I guess it’s kinda reassuring to see some things never change.

I hope you noticed what I ‘highlighted’, and – more importantly – I hope your brain immediately told you, “those URL’s sure look strange.. DANGER! DO NOT CLICK!

Because those kind of URL’s are big-time “Red Flags”.
One can only guess at what the criminals have waiting for you if you click their link.. but my guess is it starts with a virus..

Um… yah.

It is not terribly surprising to see this in my Inbox..

shaneka

I mean.. people are curious creatures by nature. And some *people* are going to take advantage of that. (And some people are lonely, and some *people* are going to take advantage of that.)

But I assure that I don’t know anyone named “Shaneka”, and I assure you that should I have tried to view that eCard, very bad things would have happened.

So – even though I really shouldn’t have to be saying this in the year 2016: IF YOU DO NOT RECOGNIZE THE SENDER –> DELETE IMMEDIATELY.

The Internet is a dangerous place, full of predators. Never forget. Always surf with your “paranoid common sense” fully activated.

Or your computer will be locked by ransomware, and you’ll have to pay the blackmailers to get your files back.

Every passing month, the idea of ‘going off the grid’ seems more and more appealing.

Note: when you see asterisk at the beginning and end of a word, it indicates the author cannot publish the word they’d prefer to use.

Important Alert

Folks, here’s something new everyone should be aware of. (So please forward this on to your friends and loved ones.)

* Meet the new ransomware that knows where you live

The carefully-crafted and user-specific emails contain links and personal information to trick victims into installing a new kind of malware.Read more..

“Ransomware” is a virus that encrypts your files, and demands you send real money for the unlock key.

“Malware” is viruses and worms and Trojans, et al.

(… and there’s no good excuse for not knowing those two words in 2016…)

Alert: Scary Windows Ten Scams

Folks, as you might know (or have learned to expect), there are some dangerous scams circulating you need to be wary of (and tell your less-savvy friends and family about).

So the fun just continues… Does anyone even use email any more? Or am I the last holdout..?
