Our mutual friend
I haven’t posted a snapshot from my Inbox in a while… But I guess it’s kinda reassuring to see some things never change.
I hope you noticed what I ‘highlighted’, and – more importantly – I hope your brain immediately told you, “those URL’s sure look strange.. DANGER! DO NOT CLICK!”
Because those kind of URL’s are big-time “Red Flags”.
One can only guess at what the criminals have waiting for you if you click their link.. but my guess is it starts with a virus..

From Russia With Love (Not Olympics, Sorry)
Bonus: Sunday Beauty #147
This spam comment, posted on my Practical advice for online safety article, is an interesting study in human psychology. (And is an interesting bit of irony as well..)
You do look at the URL, don’t you? The ‘dot ru’ domain is Russia. (For a list of the main domain names, click here.) And btw? Most of you will never want to click a Russian-hosted website. (aka “don’t”)
Yes, buy your Russian Twitter followers here. Russia makes great followers!
Good deal! Very affordable! Certainly want to improve your relevance and trustworthiness …………
Let me be blunt: if you think it might benefit you and your “revenue stream” to acquire ‘friends’ and ‘followers’, and you’d cheat to do it, please see a psychiatrist. There’s something seriously wrong with you, IMHO.
Even if this is not you, I think you’d have to agree there’s something seriously wrong with a system that encourages such thinking.
No I’m not naive (I don’t think) .. I know it is all about “monetize”..
Yes… change the rules.. (at least they’re honest about it: get ’em hooked/addicted, then jack the price. Works for drug dealers.)

Sunday Beauty 144
Folks, this image caught my eye.. and while it’s not a “beauty”, I think a few of you will like it. (Might make a good Desktop wallpaper…)

Today’s Tech: Folks, I have long said that I don’t care which antivirus you have on your Internet-connected device as long as you have one; but there’s one I tell my clients to avoid. And I guess I’m not the only one!
““I am now everlastingly grateful to Intel for freeing me from this terrible association with the worst software on the planet,” the ever-colorful McAfee told the BBC. “These are not my words, but the words of millions of irate users. My elation at Intel’s decision is beyond words.”” Read more..

Parlez-vous français?
I noticed something odd on my computer today..
The spammers all seem to think I speak French and Chinese. All of a sudden.
Except for one. They’re just hoping I’m a golddigger and an idjit. (Sadly.. odds are probably rather high when phishing for that combo.)

Sunday Ugly:
Here it is – 2013 – and criminals still think sending this *crud* is an effective money-making strategy. Why?
Certainly, the cost of mailing is negligible (aka “free”) but why bother if nobody answers?
Oh. Some *humans* must still be responding to them.

And A Few Security Horror Stories
I’ll say one nice thing about the *skuzbucket* vermin who fill the Internet with their Junk emails.. Sometimes, they make me laugh. (Even though I am witnessing a crime in progress.)
A fairly standard assortment of come-ons there. But the Better Business Bureau tack is a new one to me (it’s the same old ‘click here, then fill in your PII so I can steal your identity’ scam) .
It is National Cyber Security Awareness Month. Are you more “aware”?
Christmas came early to old TP. My choice of Elenas…
You know.. I remember when these (PC’s) were “business machines”. They’ve evolved into something else, haven’t they?
