“The financial loss from cybercrime in the U.S. exceeded $1.3 billion in 2016, a rise of 24 percent, according to a new report issued by the Federal Bureau of Investigation’s Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3).” Read more..

And remember gang –> that’s ONLY what was reported to the FBI. Think “tip of the iceberg”. (And, only USA losses.. How much global?)

* Google Gets Record-Breaking $2.7 Billion Fine for Manipulating Search Results

Google has just lost its biggest regulatory battle! Google has been hit with a record-breaking $2.7 billion (€2.42 billion) fine by the European antitrust officials for unfairly manipulating search results since 2008. After a lengthy seven-year investigation that was launched in 2010..Read more..

.. “since 2008” .. HA! Try, “since Google”. And don’t think Google’s going to pay that fine — the advertisers are. Be smart. Bail out now people.

* Judy Android malware unleashes massive attack on Google Play Store (NOTE! it wasn’t an ‘attack’.. the criminal hackers ‘poisoned’ the site with infected apps.)

When it comes to apps for mobile devices, InfoSec experts will always recommend downloading from official vendors like the Google Play Store or the Apple App Store. While these sites are much more stringent in their standards for malicious app prevention, there are always exceptions (which require the consumer to use common sense).Read more..

OMG. Too funny. “require people use common sense” ..!

Sad part is.. that ‘attack’ netted tons of cash with automated click fraud (do you advertise? Look up the term ‘click fraud’ NOW!)

Beware People (Be Aware)

There’s a new development in the world of cybercriminal scammers everyone needs to be aware of.

* Tech support scams gain sophistication, now using malware

Tech support scammers are upping their game, actively using malware to cause computer technical issues— effectively holding devices for ransom and forcing consumers to call a fake support number, which opens them up to identity theft and future credit problems.” Read more..

Remember: “Malware” is viruses, trojans, cryptolockers.. anything bad.

And to lightening things up a bit (as I don’t you to think I’m nothing but a downer).. something completely unrelated to tech:

It’s about time!!!

Talk about waking up to danger years after the war is already lost..

* US declares cybercrime a ‘national emergency’, threatens sanctions against hackers, online espionage

Sanctions will hit cyber criminals where it hurts – in the pocket – says the White House.Read more..

But.. better late than never.. right?

Wonder how/if that’ll affect relations with China.. or, since they own us, and manufacture all our goods, they’ll get a pass? (Since we know they’re major actors.)

(Sounds good, but good luck with that.)

Kinda related: No free pass for Google

Google’s vaunted “Do no evil’’ credo is taking a beating. Leaked documents show that Federal Trade Commission investigators wanted to sue the search giant on antitrust charges, but the push melted away into modest changes after Google executives made numerous trips to the White House.Read more..

And so it goes.

Loyal readers won’t be surprised by this latest “breach” headline..

* Premera Blue Cross hit by “sophisticated” hack, 11M affected

The multi-state health insurance company was attacked in January and is working with the FBI to determine the cause of the breach.Read more..

and I think it’s time to conclude that if your “personally identifying information” is in anyone’s database (and you should know, it is in several [at a minimum]) it will fall into a badguy’s hands, and your identity will be stolen, if it hasn’t been already. (Seems it’s no longer a question of “if”..) Because it sure looks to me like databases and/or their networks cannot be secured.

So I urge all my readers to sign up for a credit monitoring service; to make it part of your routine to keep a careful eye on your bank, and credit card statements, and look for any signs of unauthorized activity.

And no. Don’t turn on your smartphone’s payment feature. Ever. Regardless how ‘convenient’ it might seem on that asinine TV commercial. (You may want to join me in wrapping your credit cards in tinfoil too. See Digital pickpockets using smartphones to steal credit cards)

Just my two cents.

(Better, pay off, and then cut up every credit card but a single FEO one [for emergency use only].)

Winding down…

I hope everyone can say their holiday ranked at least ‘could’a been worse’ on the scale, or a much higher score than that.

Here’s a few final-for-2014 ‘Items of Interest’:

Price Tag Rises For Stolen Identities Sold In The Underground
What cybercriminals now charge for stolen identities, counterfeit identities, hacking tutorials, DDoS, and other services.

One year after the cybercrime underground slashed the price of a stolen identity by as much as 37% due to a glut in the black market, the price tag for a pilfered ID has inched upward again.Read more.

Tor Network Is Under Attack through Directory Authority Servers Seizures

Tor has been targeted once again, but this time at a much larger scale. A new attack on Tor network reportedly would either completely shut it down worldwide or turn it into evil network.” Read more..
