Tech – for Everyone

Tech Tips and Tricks & Advice – written in plain English.

Rain | Floods | Winner | Friday Fun

The weeks fly by and the seasons change. Our beautiful Fall weather here has been replaced with gray and rain — which means it is a good time to remind you of some basic facts about digital devices. Let me start with an easy one..

1) Electronics + Water = Bad News. (aka “sad, sad news..”)

My advice here is pretty simple and straight forward – don’t drop your doodad into water; and take your cell phone out of your pocket before you jump in the swimming pool.
Do not try to surf the net in the shower.

That said, should you manage to immerse your device, or pour an entire Thirsty-Two Ouncer onto it.. there are some actions you can take which might save its life — and these actions are good things to know before you actually need to perform them — so, please, read my How To Rescue A Drowned Device now.. ahead of time. Forewarned is forearmed.

Not directly releated… Fortunately, our rains here were not of the sort that produced any flooding — unlike some places currently in the news. Thailand, for example. They’re in bad shape.. not quite like Noah dealt with, but bad flooding there..

Did you know that thanks to globalization and the demand to produce cheaply (because, who doesn’t love a bargain?) we rely on Thailand to assemble every hard drive built? And since those factories are now underwater, nobody knows when we will ever get another hard drive built? So, the price of drives is soaring? And the price of computers is going to go up, up, up?
And we wonder about our unemployment rate.. Tip for the wise: buy now.

I am pleased to announce the winner of the random drawing for a license for TuneUp Utilities 2012 (please see, Are you interested in making your computer run as fast as it did when it was new?).

Congratulations to..

.. and, my sincere thanks to the good folks at TuneUp for making the giveaway possible.

Friday Fun (video): It has become tradition here at Tech – for Everyone to celebrate the fact that we’ve made it to Friday with a little “fun”..

Yay, the weekend’s almost here.

Bonus:

AOL? MySpace? Yahoo? Can Yahoo! be saved? Do you even care? Paul Saffo talks about other companies and the reasons for their dramatic turnarounds. As Yahoo! seems to have none of those traits, Mr. Saffo has pretty much convinced me that Yahoo! is doomed. What do you think? Read more at The New York Times Can Yahoo Be Rescued?

Bonus bonus:

AOL??? Sorry – not since ’96…

A New Widget

If It’s Thursday, There Must Be A New Widget

Click me

Spammers. Identity thieves. Spyware. Viruses. Online bullies; stalkers; pedophiles; and con artists of all stripes and flavors. Just to name a few… and the numbers are shocking.

Since I first started my public postings, I have been dedicated to helping people be more informed about the risks, and providing answers and How To’s for protecting yourself (and your computer) (because no one is going to do it for you). In fact, my very first article was The first Tech Paul Post: secure your web connection.

Today I would like to draw your attention to my much-ignored Bonus Section here on Tech – for Everyone, the two columns of additional resources on the right-hand side. You know, those links and buttons webmasters call “widgets”?
Please look to the right side of your screen.
(See the “Keep this website ad free” button? I think it’s invisible…)

I have added a “widget” today. A button/link to an online resource for those who either would like to learn more about cybercrime (and how to avoid being a victim), or have been a victim of cyber crime – McAfee’s Cybersafety Resource Portal. I hope you will “check it out” (as the kids say).

What a long strange trip it’s been…

In the middle of last year, this site passed a major website milestone, having had one million visitors. (Naturally, I wrote an article on that.) I noticed this morning that The ‘ole odometer has just clicked over the 1.5 millionth visitor to my humble tech Tips, Tricks, and Advice site, Tech – for Everyone.

I have copy>pasted the previous article, and updated it, to reflect what’s happened in intervening months.

*     *     *

Since I published my first article (The first Tech Paul Post: secure your web connection) in June of 2007, I have learned a thing or two, made some important friendships, and – hopefully – helped a few folks learn a few things, solve a few problems, and better enjoy technology along the way.

To you – Dear Reader – I say…

thank_you

A few other T4E stats:

# of articles posted: 1,056 1,423 (roughly 95.56% original, 4.44% re-postings.) Note: Use my “Search widget” to browse prior tips & answers by keywords, or browse my writings by month.

# of Reader Comments: 3,892 6,955 (almost exactly half of those are my replies.. so lets say, 2,000 3,500 readers have asked questions/commented. I welcome your comments on my articles and questions about computers and “tech”. Dialogue is what keeps the Web relevant and dynamic.)

Most popular article: Manage Startup programs in Vista

Most downloaded program (referral): Microsoft’s PowerPoint Viewer is tops, with 2,065.
The previous winner here, Security Task Manager (928 1,238) has dropped to #3.  (Panda’s Cloud Antivirus is #2, with 1,292.)

# of cups of coffee consumed by Tech Paul while writing all these articles: 16 26 (… but, they were Olympic swimming pool-sized cups. Ha!)

WordPress rated this blog a “Wow” (see, WordPress Rates Tech – for Everyone)

It was never my intention to write so many articles, nor write for so long. My intention was simply to publish a few How-To’s – so I could say “Here, read this”, instead of constantly repeating myself (when people find out you’re a tech.. they ask you questions!).

Thanks for being a part of it all, and I hope you all have a tolerably fair-to-middlin’ week!

Goodbye 2010. I’ll Miss Ye Not.

Not one person I have spoken too has seemed sad to see 2010 go, and I have not (yet) had anyone say to me, “it was my best year ever!” I think, for myself anyway, I’m just glad I made it through. Simply put, 2010 was not my best year.

But neither was it my worst. Just one example, this website, and my scribblings here, did okay in 2010. We are still here. Tech – for Everyone seemed to defy the general trend, and actually grew last year — attendance was up.

I do not know what 2011, and the future, holds. But I do know I am hoping for significant improvement — not just for me, but for you too, Dear Reader. Whatever it was that made 2010 a challenge for you, I sincerely, ardently, hope 2011 is the year your fortitude and efforts are rewarded and that those things get successfully resolved.

For lack of a specific “tech topic” today. I decided I would join the crowd, and post a Top 10 of 2010 list. (I know. I heard you shout “yippee!”) Below you will find the top T4E articles – by number of reads – of last year. I have to say, they are good ones.. and you may have missed one or two.

Where Do We Go From Here?

Did you make any “resolutions” this year? (I get the vague impression doing so is not the “vogue” any more.) I only made one. And I hope it will have a marked impact on my “life’s situation”. I (also) hope I am not boring you, but, I will go ahead and share it with you — I have challenged myself to keep one thought at the forefront of my mind and my behavior. (Think of it as a “mantra”, if you like.) It goes:

I Must Do The Most Productive Thing Possible With This Moment

(And to be honest.. I am fairly sure writing this article does not fit in with that…)
I have made little signs, and posted them around, to help me remember.

2011 is here. Let’s make the most of it. Shall we? I would like to say to each and everyone reading this — I wish you a safe, successful, and happy new year!

Spring-ing Forward

A Word To Faithful Friends Of Tech – for Everyone

This “Tech” D-I-Y Tips & Tricks, Advice and Answers website was launched in mid-2007. I have published six days a week (over 950 articles ago now) pretty much without a break or respite. It is time for one. For the next week to ten days, I will be here…

tropical paradise

In my mind, anyway… Mentally, I am teleporting to a tropical paradise. Spring is here, and I have “the fever”!

I may put up some of my older posts again, or I might not. I will – most likely – continue to answer reader mail/comments, as I always do. But I must step away and recharge my batteries, before my “blogger’s burnout” reaches “critical mass”.

I thank you for your patience and understanding.. and I remind you that all 974 previous articles are available for you to peruse (or, re-peruse) in the “Previous Tips & Answers” and keyword Search tools in the right-hand widget column.

Aloha.
