Tech – for Everyone

Tech Tips and Tricks & Advice – written in plain English.

A reminder..

.. of the reason a large part of the world isn’t speaking German..

Shortly after midnight the assault opened with the landing of more than 13,000 American, British and Canadian airborne troops …

airborne

.. followed by an amphibious landing of Allied infantry commencing at 6:30 AM…

LCI

landing-in-france

.. wading ashore on five beaches, codenamed “Utah”, “Omaha” (American), “Gold” (British), “Juno” (Canadian), and “Sword” (British). Free French, Polish, and Commonwealth troops also landed. The place was Normandy, France.

The operation was the largest amphibious invasion in history, with over 160,000 troops landing on 6 June, 1944. Over 5,000 ships were involved.

It is my humble opinion that the best book to read if you want to learn about D-Day, and the liberation of France from Nazi occupation, is The Longest Day by Cornelius Ryan. (The movie isn’t bad either.. after all, John Wayne’s in it..)

Start over

This is not “news”, but this ‘news article’ is why I’ve been saying –> scrap it ALL. Start over.

This time with security/privacy in mind.

To understand this, you need to know that “vulnerabilities” means “insecure computer code”. You need to note the idea “being found” and think “tip of the iceberg”, and you have to understand that NONE of the ‘computer languages’ are even designed to be secure. Were a ‘Programmer’ to try to write a hacker-proof ‘app’, they couldn’t because the Language, and the “libraries’ it uses are weak. Anywho.. bringing you this stuff is killing my ratings, but here’s the evidence .. um, article:

* ‘Unrelenting’ rise in vulnerabilities, Risk Based Security reports

We are on track for another record-breaking year in the pace of vulnerability disclosures, said a new report from Risk Based Security.Read more..

We have to be extraordinary, or the machines will come get us,” … Read more.

Trouble is.. in a society set up to turn us all into docile clerks and worker bees, how many can ‘be extraordinary’? And, if all 9 Billion were to be ‘extraordinary’, say by some miracle, wouldn’t that – by default – become the new ‘ordinary’?

Sigh.

Nothing is wrong with your ‘feed’…

Folks, no there’s nothing wrong with your ‘feed’ (aka ‘subscription’) – I simply haven’t posted anything new in a long time. And, tbh, don’t know if there will be anything anytime soon.

I really don’t have anything new to say. And who wants to hear, “See? I told you so!“, or, “Dudes! You gotta scrap this tech! ALL of it! Start over!” anyway?

The wackiest, weirdest gadgets of CES 2017

Folks, in case you don’t know, The Consumer Electronics Show is where companies bring out new technology products.. it’s a chance to look into the future. And also a chance to see what the big brains think we (the ‘average consumer’) want.. or will want someday.

Not only do I NOT want any of this.. I really wish they weren’t developing it. Half of it has kinda scary implications.. But, here you go –> Your glimpse into the future is here:

I really hope zero people buy any of that. Ever.

But you know people will.

Because they’re.. well.. humans.

Season’s Greetings

I have said this before, but I’ll say it again:

Cheer up. Take deep breaths.
I know folks get a little stressed out this time of year. Rude, even.
And holiday travel can be a real challenge to the psyche (even if you’re lucky enough to not to have your flight canceled..)
And I know all about crass commercialism, and how advertisements make watching TV nigh on impossible… (do you REALLY think I am going to buy a new car as a Xmas gift??) and remind us there are such things as electric razors, but..
Just breathe.
Count your blessings.
Chant “ohm… ohm… ohm…” if that’s what works for you.

I have a policy: if I encounter rudeness and stress? I counter it with a double-dose of civility, courtesy, and charm. Yes! Go ahead and take that parking space I’ve been waiting 10 minutes for! Godspeed to you! No worries, another will open in a jiffy!
Lead by example.

Don’t forget, nor lose sight of, what’s important (hint: it ain’t getting that FitBit gift-wrapped and to the Post Office..)

And even though my timing is a wee bit early, allow this grouchy curmudgeon to wish you safe travels and the very happiest of holidays.
