7 Links Challenge

I have been challenged..

Rick Robinette of What’s On My PC.. contacted me directly via email and informed me that he had nominated my Tech – for Everyone for the My 7 Links Challenge. What I have to do here is dig up 7 links from my prior writings for the following categories – then, nominate five more bloggers.

The most beautiful post
The most popular post
The most controversial post
The most helpful post
A post whose success surprised me
A post I feel didn’t get the attention it deserved
The post that I am most proud of

The goal of this challenge is to unite bloggers (from all sectors) in a joint endeavor to share lessons learned and create a bank of long but not forgotten blog posts that deserve to see the light of day again.

Thank you, Rick, for the nomination, and the “challenge”. Here’s what I came up with…

The most beautiful post: This category doesn’t quite fit a Tech Tips blog, but because it amuses me, I have been posting – every Sunday for a while now – a photograph or piece of artwork. To see my “Sunday Beauty” entries, click here

The most popular post: This one was easy: I just looked at my stats. How to boot from a CD

There may come a  time when you may need to boot from a CD — to run a ‘pure’ antivirus scan, or repair Windows, or some such thing. I have referred to this in a few prior how-to articles, and I told you that (during the boot) you will be presented with a small line of text that says “press any key to boot from CD….” And that is true if you have set your boot order in your BIOS.

The most controversial post: Parental Monitoring And Cellular Phones

If you are a parent concerned about what your child is doing with their mobile phone– whether or not they’re talking to strangers, for example– you may want to keep reading. This topic was spawned by a question from such a parent.

The most helpful post: I would like to think that every How To I have posted over the past 4 years would earn this ‘win’.. but again I just looked at the stats. Quick Tip: overcome “access denied” in Vista’s Command Prompt

The Vista security feature that’s most effective — and the most annoying — will sometimes prevent the Run and command line tools from doing what you tell them to do. This is (usually) due to the fact that you haven’t told it you’re an Administrator. Note: this technique can be applied to other programs as well.

A post whose success surprised me: I was contacted and asked to review a new website, and the rest, as they say, is history: Just Say “No” To mylife.com

Everyone in my address book received an e-mail from me asking them to join MyLife. To each and every one of you, I apologize. Please, just delete it as the spam it is.

How that happened was, I was asked to write a review of a “new” social networking site, and so I had to ‘enroll’ and become a member.. which involves building my “profile”.. which involves importing “who I know” (aka “contacts”).

A post I feel didn’t get the attention it deserved: Internet Plague – Rogue Antivirus

Currently there is an epidemic of fake anti-malware software on the Internet– which is collectively called “rogue anti-malware” (aka “scareware”). ‘Marketed’ under hundreds of different names, such as VirusRemover 2008 and Antivirus XP 2009, this type of rogue software scares people by giving false alarms, and then tries to deceive them into paying for removal of non-existing malware.

The post that I am most proud of: (4 parts) The Perfect CPU?

This 6 days-a-week series I write is, for the most part, exactly as I describe in the sub-title — Tech Tips and Tricks & Advice (as well as “Questions Answered”). My writings tend to be Microsoft Windows-oriented because that is what I, and approximately 95% of you, use. I write about the Internet a lot also… because I understand a few of you are using it too.

I also try to keep my readers informed of emerging technologies, developments, and trends (“tech news”, if you will).

To pass the blogger’s torch on, and to keep the My 7 Links Challenge going, Tech – for Everyone nominates the following blogs to take this challenge:

Paul Thurrott’s SuperSite for Windows

Pulp Tech

David Pogue

Deb Shinder’s Technology InSights

Roger A. Grimes | Security Advisor

    • delenn13,
You are referring to the comments posted on “Just say “NO” to mylife.com.. right?
Well, I deleted most that came in, and got so tired of them.. for the first time ever, I had to turn off Comments for an article.
(And to answer your question.. they hired a PR firm who, I suspect. asked many tech bloggers.)

Glad to see you back here again, and I am glad you got a laugh. It’s the best medicine!

      • Yes, it was the first one I read..Just sounded interesting. i am betting that PR firm scratched your blog off their list. The nerve of you..actually reviewing and telling the truth.

I am reading the others now. Some good info in here…but then, there is good info in most/all of your posts.

P.S Remember that link i gave about ransomware..Here’s another link…Free Kaspersky WindowsUnlocker Disinfects Ransomware | Raymond.CC Blog Doesn’t clean trojans but it does take care of the ransomware.

        • delenn13,
I have bumped into two conflicting “personal policies” with your latest helpful contribution.. (bump).

          1) I don’t censor (except cuss words)
          and
          2) I generally only allow links to the source

So… I found a perfect compromise, and left your link, but I (also) do ask readers to go to Kasperski’s page, here, for the download .. if they need it. (And I hope my readers never will.. yikes! That ransom malware is nasty.)

          • See, this is why I don’t post when I have my headaches. I am incoherent or I forget part of what I am trying to say or I screw up what I am saying. It’s a combo of the meds and the headaches.

I meant to give you permission to decide about whether to make public that site or not..Plus give the REAL site. Raymond is so good on “How to’s”. I wanted to include it also.

Plus I wanted to commend Rick for recommending you and you for taking the challenge. It’s cool reading the old posts and why you picked those particular ones.

Laters. Yes, it’s 4:30am. I have been up an hour. Duty/work calls.

  4. I applaud Rick’s Comments to Tech Paul: the “great work” he put into his blogs and the recognition of the good work of all the Techies.

7 Links Challenge…interesting to say the least! I think this serves as a multipurpose endeavor. What a good opportunity for the bloggers to come together… enabling them more exposure to their blogs.
…Re-reading the blogs… there’s the recap’s of all the posts/subjects; along with the “collage of readers” who stopped by to leave comments.
As well…I think it’s refreshing to review and to refresh the mind…to what is…to what our interests are.

I had a bit of fun assembling that article.. and faced some choices..

For example.. I almost typed “All of them” as the winner of the “A post I feel didn’t get the attention it deserved” category..
